The Best Ways To Keep Humans Away From Your Trash

BEAVER, PENNSYLVANIA– Don’t you hate it when you wake up in the morning and go outside for the newspaper only to find that all your trash cans have been knocked over and trash is littered all over the front yard? More likely than not, humans were the culprit for the unwanted mess.

Humans, although mostly quiet creatures, are voracious eaters. They are intelligent, somewhat agile, and depending on their size, can get in and out of strange places. Your trash cans are a very attractive sight to the hungry human, so you need to protect them at all costs.

Some experts say that humans can smell a meal from many feet away, and once your trash has been baking under the hot sun for days on end, it becomes a homing beacon for every human within a two mile radius of your city.

The trash cans of nocturnal animals, especially raccoons, seems to be a greater target for humans, possibly due to the fact that raccoons sleep all day, which is the time when most humans are awake and searching for food.

Humans are mostly diurnal creatures and prefer to search for food during the day. Here we see two large humans rooting through a frustrated raccoon’s trash bin.

A local pest control expert advises animals to follow these next tips to keep humans away from your trash.

1. Change Your Habits

Humans are creatures of habit, meaning that they usually follow the same predictable routine. They know that you put your trash cans in the same spot at the same time of day. Confuse them by moving the cans to different locations and laugh at them as they walk around in confused circles.

2. Use A Human Repellent

Use a human repellent to deter them from digging around your trash cans during the day when they’re most active. They hate certain smells and some foods make them want to puke, such as Brussels sprouts. Save some extra Brussels sprouts the next time you have dinner and throw them around your trash cans, or buy a repellent that smells like the rotten cabbage and spray liberally around the area.

3. Set Up An Alarm

What better way to scare off an aggressive human than to annoy them with a loud, beeping alarm? Truth be told, they hate the sound of an obnoxious wake-up alarm that most animals use on a daily basis to wake up in the morning. If you have an extra alarm, put it near your trash cans and set the alarm for a time when the humans are usually rooting through your trash looking for their next meal.

Gary Goosey

Gary got separated from his parents when he was only 2 months old. Thankfully a kind family of buzzards adopted him and raised him as their own. Even though he realizes that he’s a goose, every once in a while he still gets the urge to eat roadkill that he spots while out driving. The only complaint Gary’s coworkers have about him is his inability to stop crapping all over the office floor.
